Low vision service

At Craven & Murray we welcome patients old or new for low vision assessments. Our private assessments are carried out by our very own dispensing Optician Joan Ludlam following an up to date eye examination. Regardless of whether you are registered partially sighted, sight impaired or newly diagnosed with a condition causing low vision the consultation will prove beneficial.

The private assessment can last up to an hour and during this time we will discuss any vision related problems and demonstrate the benefits of lighting and magnification as well as other specialist equipment.

There are an increasing number of elderley patients being diagnosed with age related macular degeneration and other similar conditions. Whilst many patients come to appointments asking the optician for simply stronger lenses unfortunately there are times when the Optometrist isn’t able to prescribe stronger lenses into the spectacle frame. At this point a low vision assessment could help to provide you with an alternative way to cope with the problem.

Our aim at Craven & Murray is to offer a comprehensive private low vision assessment and access to any specialist clinics. Whatever the outcome of the assessment we always guarantee our continued support and advice.

This month Craven & Murray Opticians has reached it’s 4th birthday. Lewis and I can hardly believe how quickly the time has flown and considering we have added our two beautiful girls to our family in that time a lot has changed for us. We would like to thank our lovely and loyal customers who have made running our business enjoyable and we look forward to seeing you all for many years to come!

Food for thought

Everybody has been told at some stage in their life that carrots help you see in the dark, but is there any truth in it? Whilst carrots are a good source of Vitamin A which is required for good skin and eyes, they can’t be given the credit for improving your night vision. Interestingly the myth was created by the ministry of defence during World War 2 in order to keep their highly successful airborne interceptor radar known as AL a secret from the nazis. News stories were printed in the British press about a Lieutenant John Cunningham nicknamed â€œcats eyesâ€ due to his incredible ability to spot his prey in the dark. His skill was put down to his insatiable appetite for carrots and stories that other pilots being fed large amounts of carrots to increase their ability too were reported as a decoy!

Don’t worry we won’t tell the kids it’s not true.

There is however a rapidly growing body of evidence that certain foods can help to safeguard your vision. Vitamins of the A,C & E complex plus zinc have been shown to slow down the development of macular degeneration in existing and low grade sufferers. Vitamins C & E may also help to decrease the progression of cataracts.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are the antioxidants which help to neutralise the free radicals that can cause cell damage.

So where can we find these antioxidants?

As much as I’d love to say chocolate, they are actually found in the usual healthy foods which we are always advised to eat such as dark coloured fruit and vegetables. A large amount of lutein is also found in egg yolks. For the maximum benefit from the vegetables below they are best lightly cooked rather than raw and over cooking can sap the goodness from them. A diet containing five fruit and vegetable portions a day should be enough to get the recommended daily intake. Craven & Murray catch the eye with VIP event

Norden villagers were treated to a real spectacle last week as Craven & Murray Opticians held a very special event for its customers.

An exclusive showcase allowed guests a first look at the up-and-coming trends in eyewear, displaying all the 2011 frames and sunglasses tipped to catch the eye over the coming year from Chanel & Bvlgari.

A healthy crowd took advantage of the opportunity to view the entire new Chanel and Bvlgari ranges, alongside all the latest styles – from the ‘geek chic’ look to the cutting-edge Chanel button frames. Even frames complete with their own vanity mirror were on display; expected to be a particular favourite amongst the fashionistas next year.

Guests, including some who had travelled from as far as Clitheroe and Knutsford for the event, enjoyed pink champagne and were pampered with services from other local businesses such as eye makeovers from The Salon, colour styling from image consultants House of Colour and bite size macaroons and cupcakes from Macaroon by Alison Seagrave. And throughout the evening money was raised for Henshaws Society for Blind People, with a total donation of £135 being handed to the charity.

Craven and Murray owners Wendy and Lewis thanked everyone for attending the VIP evening, and in particular for supporting their chosen charity. Speaking after the event Wendy said:

“We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended this special evening, from our customers to our fellow friends and local businesses who helped contribute to the success of the event. A brilliant night was had by all and we raised a fantastic sum for Henshaws. So thank you to everyone who came.”

Co-owner and husband Lewis added:

“We’ve been in Norden for over three years now and are so very grateful for the support we have received from the local community over this time. Alongside high quality eye-care and exceptional service, we see no reason why a village like Norden shouldn’t have access to chic and stylish, top of the range eyewear too. And we take real pride in being able to offer this unique experience to our customers.”

On the night, one lucky prize draw winner, Ann Whitehead walked away with a free pair of designer frames of her choice, and everyone who attended was given a goody bag including mini macaroons, Elemis samples, glasses accessories and a discount voucher.

Facebook winner chooses Ray-ban sunglasses

Chris Thew our Facebook winner came to Craven & Murray on Saturday to choose his new sunglasses. Along with the styling advice of Lewis & Catherine his wife he made a great choice of the Ray-ban 3320. Although a wrap around sporty style these frames can now be made into prescription sunglasses.

In fact Lewis & I attended a lecture at Manchester United’s football ground, Old Trafford this week on the very subject of sports vision and sports eye wear. Hosted by lens supplier BBGR & Rupp & Hubrach it was a really interesting look at the sports vision area of our profession. As Lewis is a keen cyclist hopefully it will be a natural progression for him to do some extra qualifications to become a sports vision specialist in the near future. Looking at him here though I think he’s got his eyes on Fergie’s job. You should have heard his language as soon as he stepped up there.
